Sherman Andrus (born June 23, 1942) is an American gospel singer, who is probably best known as the man who broke the "color barrier" by becoming the first African-American lead singer of a mainstream Christian music group, The Imperials.
Starting by singing in his mother's Gospel group, Andrus would soon join COGICS and then The Disciples, both lead by Andrae Crouch. In 1972, He joined the Gospel quartet The Imperials who would go on to perform live and record with Elvis Presley.
Co-lead singer Terry Blackwood and Sherman would later form the Contemporary Christian music duet Andrus, Blackwood and Company, releasing six albums and scoring a number of top CCM hit songs.
Andrus went solo in 1986 and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame in 1998.
